Black History Month 2022
Black History Month is a time to recognize the accomplishments of African Americans and celebrate their central role in U.S. history. This month we are recognizing Thomas J. Martin who saved the lives of many with his improved fire extinguisher.
Martin’s fire extinguisher is attached to a reservoir of stored water. He created a wet piping system capable of channeling pressurized water to the nozzles inside a building. If a fire broke out the stored water could be used to extinguish the flames. He was awarded a patent entitled “Fire extinguisher” on March 26, 1872. The patent refers to pipes and valves and not the wall-hanging type of extinguisher that is normally displayed. Martin’s improved version is often regarded as the first practical use of the fire extinguisher.
It is essential to have the proper tools to protect yourself, your home, and your business. In the event of a fire, a fire extinguisher may be needed to assist you when exiting the building.
