Environmental Benefits of Fire Sprinklers

Clean water is essential for everyone. In addition to keeping us healthy, water provides job creation and economic/social/human development.

Fire sprinklers can help combat the global water crisis and provide public safety in the process. In an experimental study performed by the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC), researchers sought to quantify the environmental impact of automatic fire sprinklers. Two identical living rooms were built and set ablaze by firefighters. They were then left alone for approximately ten minutes. One living room was extinguished without a fire sprinkler, while the other was assisted by a single residential fire sprinkler. Researchers then ran several tests, and their findings showed that:

  • The non-sprinkler discharge had high pH levels which represents serious environmental concern.
  • The sprinkler reduced water usage by 50-91 percent.
  • The fire sprinkler discharged fewer pollutants compared to that of the fire hose.
  • The sprinkler system cut greenhouse emissions by 97.8%.

Though it is well known that Fire Sprinklers provide public safety and reduce property damage, the environmental benefits are often overlooked. By promoting and installing fire sprinkler systems, USAFP is not only saving lives, but is also working toward achieving sustainability and combating the global water crisis.
