New School Year Fire Protection Budget Check List
US fire departments respond to an average of 3,230 structure fires in schools per year. These incidents caused one civilian death, 39 injuries, and $37 million in direct property damage annually. Therefore, it is important to make fire and life safety a priority for your budget so tragedies like these can be prevented.
What are the causes of school structure fires?
In a 5-year study ending in 2018, the NFPA found that there are four major causes of school structure fires. These leading causes of fire were:
- 40% started intentionally, resulting in 23 civilian injuries and $20 million in direct property damage.
- 31% occurred due to cooking equipment, leading to 3 civilian injuries and one million dollars in direct property damage.
- 19% broke out due to playing with heat sources, causing six civilian deaths and two million dollars in direct property damage.
- 10% started from heating equipment, prompting four civilian injuries and one million dollars in direct property damage.
